There are few places where biodiversity is as beautiful as in South Africa. In addition to tropical reefs and corals, you will also find the larger animals that make diving so great here. (Whales, Dolphins, Whale sharks, different shark species,…)

Our South Africa trip is a must for every diving and wildlife enthusiast. It is a unique opportunity to see the best of both worlds in a short travel time

Aliwal Shoal is the world famous shark diving hotspot in South Africa, where you can see different species of sharks all year round. The Marine Protected Area is also a Mission Blue Hope Spot. Whether you’re a macro fan looking for nudibranchs or an adrenaline junkie looking for larger pelagic species such as sharks and rays, Aliwal Shoal has some amazing dives in store for you.

Dive Holiday & Big5 Safari

During the diving trip we also do 2 Baited Shark Dives.
Shark bait dives here are one of a kind and something you should experience at least once in your life. With two drums full of bait, the drums slosh in the current, creating a scent trail that the sharks like to follow to investigate. During the summer months (November-March) tiger sharks often seen and may sometimes be accompanied by a bullshark. Hammerheads can be seen as they pass by in the summer months, It’s a great opportunity to get up close and positively interact with sharks while capturing the experience on camera.

Cathedral

Perhaps the most famous spot on Aliwal Shoal, and a must on everyone’s bucket list! Cathedral is often filled with dozens of sandtiger sharks (seasonal), and a few resident Potato Bass. If you keep your eyes open, you are sure to find several species of nudibranchs and leaf fishes. Don’t forget to look up, hammerhead sharks and humpback whalescan all be spotted here.

Big 5 Safari

Hluhluwe Imfolozi National Park is the oldest game reserve in South Africa. The park consists of 960 km² of hilly area in central Zululand covered with classical savannas. The park is home to the BIG 5 (leopard, lion, buffalo, rhinoceros and elephant). I'm only an open water diver, can I dive at Aliwal Shoal?

The beauty of Aliwal Shoal is that the reef system caters for all skill levels.

Whether you’re doing a DSD (Discover Scuba Dive or Discover Shark Dive) or an advenced diver with 1000’s of dives, Aliwal Shoal’s diversity in Marine Life has it all.

The conditions can sometimes be a bit on the challenging side, making it FANTASTIC for adventure seekers. Our launches are all through the UmKomazi River Mouth or from the beach in an 8m zodiac/rib/rubber duck.

If you are an Open Water Diver, Aliwal Shoal is an amazing spot to get your Advanced License.

When to go?

Diving at Aliwal Shoal is available all year long. The average water temperature stays near 24°C/ 5°F through the most of the year and never falls below 16°C/60°F. Warm climate offers good conditions for diving almost any time of the year, but if you want to see ragged tooth sharks, the best time to come is between July and November.

What dive gear do I need to bring?

It’s always great to dive in your own gear. It’s familiar, it’s comfortable and it fits. However, we understand the limitations of travel with your gear, especially if your holiday is not ONLY a dive holiday. Therefor, Blue Ocean Dive resort do have all gear available for rental. While they have everything you’ll need in rental gear, we do recommend bringing at least your own mask if you can.
